Where to watch
- The policy statement appears at 2:00 p.m. ET on the Board’s monetary policy page.
- The press conference starts at 2:30 p.m. ET and is webcast from the same site.
- Minutes of the meeting are released about three weeks later, on a date the Board lists after the meeting.
Check the day’s listing on the morning of the decision. The 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. pattern is the regular one. An unscheduled meeting, if one is called, is announced separately and can use a different clock time.
What the statement actually decides
The Committee sets a target range for the federal funds rate, the overnight rate banks charge each other. Mortgage rates, credit-card rates, and savings yields do not move by that exact amount on the same afternoon. They move with Treasury yields and with what investors expected before the statement. A decision that matches the forecast can leave mortgage rates almost unchanged. A surprise is what moves them.
If you want the household number, use the mortgage rate impact page and type the rate your lender quoted, then the payment calculator for taxes and insurance.
How to use this page
This page is the standing schedule. When a meeting ends, the “next” row moves forward on its own. News coverage of what the Committee said belongs in an update to one explainer, not in a second article with the same question in the headline.
